The Japanese language program is designed to support all students, from entry-level learners who will need to interact with locals to native speakers who wish to continue the development of their mother tongue

HIS believes in deeper learning methods to create more engaging, memorable and advanced academic experiences. They use Project-Based Learning, Socratic Seminar, and Social-Emotional Learning, and place a strong emphasis Outdoor Education & Environmental Sustainability.

【Human Flourishing Curriculum】
Inspired by research from the Compassionate Systems Framework at MIT, the Center for Healthy Minds, the World Economic Forum, and others, the curriculum is based on the driving question as a school: what kind of education enables people and the planet to flourish? It is organized into 3 areas of learning:

• Foundational Literacies: Including a sequence of development in Literacy, Numeracy, Scientific Literacy, ICT Literacy, Financial Literacy, Cultural & Civic Literacy, Physical (Body) Literacy, and Artistic Literacy.
• Competencies: These include Critical Thinking & Problem Solving, Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Systems Thinking.
• Mindsets: These include Curiosity, Initiative, Adaptability, Social & Cultural Awareness, Resilience, Outlook, Focused Attention, and Generosity. “

From daily interactions in the local forests to extended expeditions in the mountains and rivers, the school considers nature its first teacher. The exploration of the mountains, forests, and rivers will be integral to the student experience and learning

Dance / workout room

During the admissions process, non-native speakers will be assessed to ascertain the level of support they might need. To be granted admission, all students must have at least an Intermediate level of English. Students who qualify to receive EAL support at HIS will benefit from having a specialist working closely with them in various settings to support language acquisition. ​

Starting in 9th grade, the program helps students tailor their course selection, identify extracurricular activities, and explore options, all with the aim of finding what they most love
